Retired Judge Zakeria Mohammed “Zak” Yacoob has been blind from infancy. He studied at a school for the blind and is married to Ms Anu
Yacoob. He has two adult children. Judge Yacoob completed his LLB Degree at the former University of Durban-Westville (now UKZN).

Whilst there, he joined the African National Congress (ANC) underground. As Judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa from 1998 to 2013, Judge Yacoob has become known nationally and internationally for his contribution to the socio-economic rights jurisprudence of South Africa.
