Data@breakfast webinar: Mapping South Africa’s ‘green apartheid’ using satellite remote sensing and cloud computing
Abstract: Dr Venter will talk through the findings recently published in a paper titled “Green Apartheid: Urban green infrastructure remains unequally distributed across income and race geographies in South Africa”. The spatial inequality in South Africa is evident to all of us, however, up until now it has been difficult to quantify at the national scale. Recent advances in cloud computing and the plethora of freely available satellite imagery has allowed us to map urban green spaces with fine resolution across South Africa. He will present how this was done, what was found and discuss the potential implications.
