Data@breakfast webinar: The National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences
Abstract: Earlier this year the Honourable Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, has signed the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Science (NITheCS) into existence. Implementing the transition from the current National Institute for Theoretical Physics to NITheCS has started. Next to Theoretical Physics the novel Institute will support research, training and engagement for Mathematics, Statistics, Astrophysics and Astronomy, Bioinformatics and Quantitative Biology, Quantitative Finance, Earth Modelling Systems and Climate Change Modelling, and Data Science. The aim of the talk is to introduce the audience to the vision and mission of the novel Institute.
Bio: Francesco Petruccione is a DSI/NRF South African Research Chair for Quantum Information Processing and Communication and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Big Data and Informatics at UKZN. He is is currently the interim Director of the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences.
