Computer Science Master’s students from UKZN attended the 10th CHPC Introductory Programming School and the 2nd NITheP Foundations of Theoretical and Computational Science Summer School from 1 to 9 February in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.
The Summer School is jointly organised by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) and the National Institute for Theoretical Physics (NITheP). It is aimed at postgraduate students in the fields of Physics; Chemistry; Mathematics; Applied Mathematics; Biology; Bioinformatics; Computer Science; and Engineering with an interest in both theoretical and computational science. Students were introduced to basic and advanced tutorials on the use of Linux, command line scripting, python programming and the use of the CHPC resources. Advanced lectures covered mathematical packages such as Matplotlib, Numpy and Scipy.
The students were also fortunate to be exposed to foundational material on EconoPhysics, Quantum Information Processing and Computation, and Machine Learning for theoretical and computational science. These were delivered by national and international experts in their respective fields.
The students found the experience rewarding and useful for their continued MSc studies.
