The Howard College campus was abuzz recently as 100 Grade 11 and 12 learners took part in the Engineering Winter School at the UNITE Building.
Choosing the right field of study can be a daunting task for high school learners. The Winter School offers informative and fun activities to inform learners of the different engineering degrees offered at UKZN.
A variety of talks and interactive activities were designed to introduce the learners to numerous engineering careers. On arrival, they received Engineering Winter School t-shirts and bags. The activities were supported by all lecturers and guest speakers were invited from the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) and eThekwini Water and Sanitation.
The events included a field trip to Moses Mabhida Stadium and a walk-through of the redevelopment of North Beach which was supervised by Unite Director, Mr Noel Powell.
The programme ended on a high note with a prizegiving ceremony and a braai.
Grade 11 Hillcrest High School learner and winner of the Engineering Winter School Champion award, Mr Rory Hamsworth, said: ‘The highlight for me was putting together a functional circuit at the Electrical Engineering discipline as well as gaining more knowledge about the different engineering career opportunities. I had so much fun!’
