Chemical Engineering student, Ms Mawenzokuhle Mnqayi, is the recipient of the Frene Ginwala Scholarship, a special prestige entrant equity award for the top Black African female students entering the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).
Mnqayi was consistently one of the top-performing learners at Nkosikayingangathi Secondary School, achieving first position in her grade for three terms of her matric year and earning seven distinctions. She placed second in the Mayoral Excellence Awards, was among the top 10 learners in the uMkhanyakude District and ranked among the top 20 learners in the 2025 KwaZulu-Natal Inter-District Physics Olympiad.
Mnqayi’s fascination with the scientific principles driving everyday phenomena led her to enrol in Chemical Engineering, which challenges her analytical skills and encourages her to consider how chemical reactions and processes can be made more efficient, safer and more practical on a larger scale.
“I find it really fascinating that something such as the behaviour of molecules can be connected to processes operating on an industrial scale,” she said of the discipline.
UKZN was her university of choice because of its reputation for producing high-quality graduates who make meaningful contributions to society. She has enjoyed the academic challenges and independence of university life.
Hoping to pursue postgraduate studies in Chemical Engineering, she plans to use the knowledge she gains to work as a professional engineer in industry, while continuing to develop herself through further study and specialised training. She is using her undergraduate years to explore where she can make the greatest contribution.
Receiving the scholarship means more to Mnqayi than simply the valuable financial assistance it provides.
“It is recognition of the effort I have put into my education and an encouragement to continue striving for excellence. I am very grateful for the confidence that the Frene Ginwala Scholarship places in me, and I hope to justify that confidence through my future achievements,” she said.
Mnqayi balances her demanding academic programme by spending time with loved ones and pursuing her interests in music, astronomy and general knowledge.
She thanked her family, teachers, lecturers, and everyone who has supported her throughout her academic journey through their encouragement, guidance and belief in her. She thanked UKZN for investing in her education and recognising her potential through the Frene Ginwala Scholarship.
