PhD graduate Dr Nduduzo Rasenyalo’s research focused on understanding how solid tumours grow and respond to different types of treatment, particularly when therapies are combined.
Rasenyalo, who was awarded her doctorate in Applied Mathematics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), is committed to applying mathematical principles to real-world challenges, particularly in the field of healthcare.
Her research, supervised by Dr Hermane Mambili-Mamboundou and titled ‘Optimal Control in Treatment of a Solid Tumour’, focused on tackling one of the world’s most pressing health challenges – cancer.
“I focused on understanding how solid tumours grow and respond to different types of treatment, particularly when therapies are combined,” explained Rasenyalo. “I developed mathematical models to simulate how cancer develops and how treatments like chemotherapy and other therapies can work together to slow or stop tumour growth.
“This is important as it enables researchers and medical professionals to understand better how to develop more effective treatment strategies.”
Rasenyalo’s interest in the field stems from her desire to apply mathematics to meaningful, real-world healthcare problems. Noting the global impact of cancer, she explained her motivation: “I was drawn to the challenge of using mathematical tools to contribute, even in a small way, to improving treatment outcomes and understanding disease progression.”
The significance of her research lies in its potential to bridge mathematics and medicine in meaningful ways. “My research has the potential to support the development of more effective and optimised treatment plans,” she said. “By providing a framework to study tumour growth and treatment response, it can help inform better decision-making in clinical settings and contribute to ongoing research in cancer treatment.
“Abstract mathematical modelling can play a vital role in shaping practical solutions in healthcare.”
Looking ahead, Rasenyalo remains focused on expanding her impact, with plans to continue working at the intersection of mathematics, data and real-world applications.
“This includes exploring opportunities where I can apply advanced analytical and modelling skills, whether in academia, industry or technology-driven sectors,” she said. “I am particularly interested in roles that allow me to solve complex problems and contribute to impactful innovations.”
Rasenyalo acknowledged the strong support system that helped her succeed. “I am deeply grateful to my supervisor, Dr Hermane Mambili-Mamboundou, my colleagues from Mangosuthu University of Technology, my mentors, and academic peers who provided guidance and support throughout my journey,” she said. She also thanked her family, noting that their encouragement, patience and belief played a crucial role in helping her succeed.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Rasenyalo enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as going to church and “really working on my spiritual growth”.
Reflecting on her PhD journey, Rasenyalo encouraged others considering a similar path. “Completing a PhD is a challenging but rewarding journey,” she said. “I would encourage aspiring students to remain persistent, stay curious and embrace the process of learning. Every challenge along the way contributes to personal and intellectual growth.”
Rasenyalo’s decision to pursue her doctoral studies at UKZN was a deliberate one: she was motivated by the University’s strong reputation in applied mathematics and its emphasis on research that addressed real-world challenges.
“UKZN provides an environment that encourages critical thinking, innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration,” she said.
