The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) top honours student, Mr Vidhan Singh, was awarded the prestigious Zac Yacoob Scholarship in recognition of his outstanding academic achievement and exceptional performance during his Honours studies in Statistics.
The Zac Yacoob Scholarship is awarded annually to the single best honours student at UKZN, recognising academic excellence and celebrating students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their studies.
Singh, who completed his undergraduate studies at UKZN before enrolling for a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Statistics, said remaining at the University was a natural decision as it enabled him to build on the strong academic foundation established during his undergraduate years.
He said the University’s supportive learning environment, internationally recognised expertise within the discipline and curriculum aligned closely with his career aspirations. He also valued the opportunity to develop postgraduate research skills while working alongside experienced academics. This prepared him for a wide range of future career opportunities.
His passion for Mathematics and Statistics inspired him to pursue Honours in Statistics, a qualification that has allowed him to explore diverse areas of modern statistical science while strengthening his analytical and research capabilities.
The programme has exposed him to specialised fields, including Econometrics, Generalised Linear Models and Time Series Analysis, equipping him with the skills to develop predictive models, analyse complex relationships and generate reliable forecasts. Other modules, such as Mixed Models, Spatial Statistics, Customer Segmentation Methods and Risk Management, demonstrate how statistical techniques are applied across sectors including healthcare, environmental science, finance, business and the social sciences.
Singh’s honours programme will culminate in a research project based on real-world data, enabling him to integrate the theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired throughout the year while addressing authentic research questions through statistical analysis.
Singh said he had developed a strong interest in Time Series Analysis and Biostatistics, recognising their significance in finance, healthcare and research. He believes these fields offer opportunities to use advanced statistical modelling to solve real-world problems, contribute to meaningful research and improve lives through data-driven insights.
Looking ahead, Singh plans to continue his academic journey towards a PhD in Statistics, driven by a desire to contribute to research and the rapidly expanding field of data science. He said he was inspired by the ‘Era of Big Data’ and Artificial Intelligence, particularly the innovative use of analytics in professional sport. As a passionate Liverpool Football Club supporter, he admires the club’s pioneering application of data analytics to improve performance and decision-making, and hopes to one day join the club’s analytics team, combining his passion for statistics and football.
Outside the classroom, Singh maintains a healthy balance between academic demands and personal wellbeing. Spending time with his family remains central to his life, whether through family gatherings, outings or holidays. He has also discovered an interest in gardening, appreciating the patience it requires and the connection it fosters with nature. Friendly indoor soccer matches with friends and competitive squash battles have provided welcome opportunities to relax, remain active and recharge.
Singh thanked those who had supported him throughout his academic journey, beginning with his parents, Mr Deepak and Mrs Nerita Singh, whose unwavering encouragement, sacrifices and belief in his abilities had enabled his success.
He also acknowledged the influence of his younger brother, Zuriel, whose enthusiasm and humbling spirit continually motivated him; as well as his lecturers in the Discipline of Statistics for their expertise, mentorship and encouragement, crediting them with helping shape his academic development and nurturing his passion for the discipline.
Reflecting on receiving the Zac Yacoob Scholarship, Singh described the award as both an honour and a powerful source of motivation. “It is a poignant reminder that dedication and perseverance are recognised,” he said, echoing Nobel physicist Richard Feynman’s words: “I was an ordinary person who studied hard.”
“The award strengthens my belief in my potential and inspires me to continue pushing boundaries in my academic journey while striving to make meaningful contributions through research and data science.”
