Mr Rowan Pellow-Jarman is a former Penzance Primary School and Glenwood High School pupil who decided to study at UKZN because of its good academic reputation and close proximity to his home.
A Malegapuru W Makgoba Scholarship award winner, Pellow-Jarman is in the second year of study for a BSc degree in Computer Science at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science.
The scholarship, named after the first Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UKZN, Professor Malegapuru W Makgoba, is awarded to the five top-ranked undergraduates going into second year.
‘The scholarship means I am able to study without worrying about funding or applying for a student loan which is a big relief,’ said Pellow-Jarman. ‘I want to thank UKZN for this award and I commend the Institution for improving the accessibility to Higher Education.
‘My parents were very happy to hear that I had received a scholarship and that I will be able to support myself,’ said Pellow-Jarman.
‘My experience at UKZN so far has been positive and I am enjoying studying here.’
His advice to up-and-coming students is to be curious and consult with others for answers. ‘I advise fellow students to ask more questions in class and take advantage of the assistance teachers and other students offer,’ said Pellow-Jarman.
‘Get ahead early so you can enjoy the benefits later in life – you will regret missing opportunities.’
After completing his undergraduate degree, Pellow-Jarman plans to continue studying towards honours and master’s degrees.
