UKZN is in the top half of a list of 100 best universities in emerging economies recently released by the respected Times Higher Education (THE).
The University is ranked 49th in THE’s Emerging Economies Rankings 2019.
Other South African universities on the list are the University of Cape Town (9th), the University of the Witwatersrand (11th), the University of Stellenbosch (24th), the University of Pretoria (78th) and the University of Johannesburg (99th).
China’s Tsinghua University is top of the list with Peking University second. China has 72 universities placed among the 440 education institutions ranked, while India has 49.
The Emerging Economies Rankings rates universities in 43 countries classed as emerging economies, including Brazil, India, Mexico, Taiwan, Turkey and the Czech Republic.
The Ranking uses the same 13 performance indicators as the World University Rankings, measuring teaching, research, research impact, industry income and international outlook, but the weightings are adjusted to reflect the characteristics of this group of universities.
