Proud BSc Geological Sciences graduate Mr Khayelihle Magudulela attributes his academic success to curiosity and a deep fascination with the Earth, along with personal determination and structured academic support. Having combined hard work with practical experience, he feels prepared for a future in engineering geology.
Khayelihle explained that his decision to study at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) was intentional and well-informed. “I chose Geological Sciences at UKZN because of the University’s strong reputation in Earth Science and its focus on both academic knowledge and practical field experience,” he said.
His interest in the discipline was rooted in a desire to understand the natural world. “I have always been fascinated by how the Earth works, from the processes that shape landscapes to the materials beneath our feet,” he said, adding that UKZN provided the ideal environment to explore these interests while learning from experienced lecturers and gaining valuable fieldwork exposure.
Over the course of his studies, Khayelihle developed an appreciation for a wide range of modules. While he initially found Mineralogy challenging, it ultimately became one of his favourites. He also enjoyed Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, and in his third year, his academic interests broadened further through modules such as Environmental Geology, Structural Geology and Hydrogeology.
“These modules stood out because they connect geological knowledge with real-world applications such as infrastructure development, environmental management and hazard assessment,” he explained. “They helped me understand how geology plays an important role in solving practical engineering and environmental challenges.”
Khayelihle became increasingly interested in the application of geological knowledge to engineering and environmental contexts by understanding the ground conditions that support structures and the mechanisms by which natural hazards occur.
He credited everyday experiences for nurturing this curiosity. “All of this curiosity was inspired by the engineering structures and construction projects I passed on my journeys home to Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal as well as by the articles I read and the videos I explored on YouTube,” he noted. Such influences reinforced his desire to pursue a career that brought geology together with infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
Looking ahead, Khayelihle remains committed to furthering his studies. “My plan is to finish my BSc Honours in Geology (Environmental and Engineering Geology), hoping to deepen my understanding of geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and rock engineering applications of geology,” he said. His long-term goal is to establish a career in engineering geology, with a focus on infrastructure development, environmental sustainability and geohazard assessment.
Khayelihle thanked his family, including his grandmother, Gogo Mkhize, his uncles Mr Siphamandla Mkhize and Mr Nhlanhla Thwala, his sisters Ms Sphumelele Khoza, Ms Kwenza Magudulela and Ms Kwethu Magudulela, his mother, Ms Siphelele Magudulela and his late grandfather Mkhulu Mkhize. “This degree is dedicated to them,” he said. “Their encouragement, support and guidance helped me stay motivated through difficulties in my studies.”
He also recognised the contributions of mentors and peers who shaped his academic journey. He appreciated the guidance of student counsellor Mr Sanele Zuma, principal academic development officer Ms Nozipho Hlalukane, and the lecturers in the UKZN Geology Department. Reflecting on his friendships, he added: “I wasn’t someone who studied in groups until I studied with them, and it changed my entire learning experience. I appreciate you all.”
Said Hlalukane: “Khayelihle’s story is that of a student who has succeeded against all odds, through steadfast resolve. At one stage, personal circumstances were affecting his performance and his continuation at university was not guaranteed. Yet after a successful appeal, he rebuilt his academic standing through structured monitoring and support overseen by the office of the Dean of Teaching and Learning. Now he has completed his undergraduate degree and been admitted into Honours in Geology. His story speaks to resilience, the impact of structured academic support, and the power of second chances within the Sciences.”
Outside of academics, Khayelihle enjoys working out when time allows, although he admitted that his current honours studies have significantly limited his free time.
“Studying Geological Sciences has been a rewarding journey that has taught me resilience, curiosity and problem-solving,” he said.
“I plan to continue contributing to the field by applying geological knowledge to real-world challenges and inspiring other young students to consider careers in Earth Sciences.”
