The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Science Centre, based in the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science, participated in the launch of National Science Month 2026 at the Vaal University of Technology’s Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park in Sebokeng, Vereeniging.
The event marked the expansion of National Science Week into a month-long national programme aimed at creating more opportunities for meaningful public engagement with science, technology, and innovation. It was held under the theme, ‘Science, Technology and Innovation are for Everyone’.
The launch brought together more than 100 organisations, including universities, science centres, research councils, government departments, industry and non-governmental organisations. Close to 3 000 people attended. The UKZN Science Centre participated as part of the national science centre exhibition, while the UKZN Aerospace Systems Research Institute also represented the University.
“The Science Centre’s exhibition focused on science through storytelling, using interactive exhibits and practical demonstrations to make scientific concepts engaging and accessible,” said Science Centre Coordinator Ms Lexia Naidoo. “Visitors were encouraged to explore, ask questions and connect science to their everyday lives.”
The exhibition also provided an opportunity to share information about UKZN’s College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science. Learners received guidance on the College’s programmes, subject choices and career pathways in agriculture, engineering, science and technology-related fields.
Said Naidoo: “Through its participation, the UKZN Science Centre reinforced the central message of National Science Month: Science should be accessible, inclusive and connected to real educational and career opportunities.”
